What is Eczema?

Atopic dermatitis, also known as eczema, is most commonly seen in childhood but can continue into adolescence and adulthood.  Eczema patients often have a weakened skin barrier leading to loss of moisture and vulnerability to irritants and infections.

Some eczema patients have what is called the atopic triad where they have eczema, seasonal allergies and asthma.

What causes Eczema?

There is no single cause and it is different for every patient.  Genetics play a role as well as a dysregulated immune system leading to inflammation.  Growth of staph bacteria on the skin can also exacerbate eczema.

Treatment

At baseline, we want to strengthen the skin barrier.  But, in addition, eczema typically needs at least a short course of topical steroids to control flares.  Topical steroids have a rare risk of skin atrophy and very rarely adrenal suppression when used in the wrong location or for a prolonged period of time. However, if topical steroids are used consistently for a limited period of time, they can be very effective with a low risk of side effects.

Will my eczema go away completely?

Eczema is usually not cured but the goal is preventing flares and diminishing the severity of flares.  In most cases, Dr. Miller can significantly improve symptoms so that eczema is not affecting daily life in a negative way.
